Wednesday night 'finish-up' work session

Thanks again to everyone who has participated in The House God Built. We are scheduling a work session on Wednesday night (7/9) at 6 pm. We need to take all of our tools out of the basement, paint the inside of the basement walls, finish cutting the remaining bricks on the driveway, and clean up the vacant lot across the street that we used to store our materials during construction.

Anyone who has tools left over at THGB needs to pick them up soon as we need to return the construction trailer. Also, please double-check that any tools you brought home are yours. We have some tools that are missing but lots that are still on-site.

We plan on starting our work at 6 pm and working until about 8 pm. Hope to see you then.

Pictures of The House God Built

Now that the dedication has happened and the Thomas family has seen their house we thought we would share some pictures of the finished work. The blog has been deliberatly quiet on details and pictures as we have been trying to keep some surprises. The family has not been inside the house since framing occurred or to the house at all in one week.

Dedication Day

Today we will celebrate the completion of The House God Built. It has been an incredible journey. Most of those involved with this project have learned a lot about construction but we've learned even more about other things. We've learned how to bridge the divide between the predominantly white north Cape and predominantly black south Cape. We've learned how to be less reliant on our own means and abilities and more reliant on God to provide. We've learned how to take what we're given and turn it into something beautiful that represents faith in action. And most importantly we've seen His power firsthand.

We've asked for your help to build this house and many have answered above and beyond that call. We now ask for your help in it's dedication. Please come celebrate with us at 10 am. Following the program there will be tours of the first floor of the house and a BBQ afterwards. It should be an awesome day.

The House God Built is at 529 S. Hanover. We recommend parking on College which can be accessed from West End near it's intersection with Highway 74.

Just because construction is done doesn't mean that the blog is ending. We will be uploading pictures of the last phases of construction and dedication soon.

Last day of construction set for Friday

Thursday was a very productive day at The House God Built. The house is very nearly a home! Thanks to all who have contributed to this project through prayers, material or financial donations, or volunteerism. We have been blessed to have had the opportunity to work with each of you.

Friday will be another marathon day to complete construction. Work will resume at 8 am and continue late into the night. We still have projects that are being completed and are working through these quickly. Also we have two critical inspections scheduled today so please be in prayer for The House God Built as we work through this last day.

Please come for the dedication on Saturday at 10 am. We're expecting a big crowd and would love it if you could be a part of it. Following the dedication will be tours of the house and lunch. Parking is limited so please carpool if possible and the best parking will be on College. For directions see the map on yesterday's posting below.

Thursday and Friday plans

The house is very nearly complete. We need to finish one more major project and lots of little details. We will be working Thursday and Friday night until The House God Built is done. Our plans are to have all tools and building materials removed from the house on Thursday if possible and Friday night at the latest. If you have left tools at the house please pick them up one evening this week. We have limited space in the construction trailer for tools that cannot be picked up now but the trailer will be removed from the property this weekend and returned soon.

Plans are also coming together for the dedication on Saturday. Please join us at 10 am to celebrate what God has done and is doing in Cape Girardeau. Following the dedication we will have tours of the house and lunch is provided at noon.

Hanover is a rather narrow street and parking is limited. We want your entire family to come but please come in one car if possible. We also suggest parking on College and walking up to THGB. Hope to see you Saturday!

Tuesday update and plans for the week

Tuesday was a very productive day at The House God Built. Numerous tasks are being completed daily and decorating has begun. Details and pictures are being withheld until after the dedication this Saturday at 10:00 am.

We can still use your help. Our plans are to work this afternoon and every night this week.

Tuesday, June 10, 2008

Tuesday plans

Monday night our plans were dampened by the rain. We were able to adhere the majority of the bricks on the sidewalk but were not able to complete the job once the downpour began. If it dries out enough we'll try to finish this on Tuesday afternoon. We were able to finish much of the first floor porch and should be able to finish this and the second floor porch on Tuesday.
On Tuesday we'll start working at 10 am and continue until 9 pm. We would like to finish any work possible on the porch and bricks so that the landscapers can finish their work out front soon. We also need to finish the stair rail and do some last minute touch-ups.

Monday, June 9, 2008

Monday night work and Tuesday plans

Our plans are to meet at 6 pm on Monday night. Our priority is to adhere the bricks edging the sidewalks and the front portion of the driveway to make it possible to turn those areas over to the landscapers. We also would like to work on finishing the front porch and working on the stair railing inside the house. If you can help please come over to The House God Built at 6 pm.

Tuesday will be an all day work session to finish up as many items as possible. More information regarding Tuesday will be posted later today.

Another great weekend comes to a close

Thanks to a fantastic turnout at The House God Built today we got all of the bricks moved across the street and placed onto the driveway and sidewalks. Due to the numerous hardworking volunteers we were able to achieve this in about 4 hours. That's a lot of bricks in not very much time! All that remains to complete this part of the project is to cut numerous half bricks and then go back and adhere the edge bricks to the concrete. We hope to complete that on Monday night so the landscapers will have free reign on the front yard on Tuesday.

Inside, the stair railing continues to go up. Lots of cleaning and arranging happened inside THGB also. Because of this the house is now closed to visitors and will only be open to those who are working inside the house. It will be open again on Saturday to walk through during the dedication.

Until Saturday we'll be working at the house every evening starting at 6 pm. Tuesday we are planning to have a big push to finish up many of the last minute details and we will be working most all day. Please come help that day or any evening if you have the opportunity.

Great progress on Saturday, more planned for today

Saturday was a very productive day at The House God Built. We had a great turn-out of volunteers who came willing help out in any way they could. Thank you! Outside the landscaping is coming along great - the backyard is now approaching it's final form with the soil graded and plants planted while the front yard was also graded and planting there also has started. Inside THGB, the fireplace was rocked and looks fantastic! We also have all plumbing completed, all electrical completed, and all doors and door hardware installed. Walls were touched up with paint and the upstairs and parts of the downstairs were cleaned. Decorating will probably begin soon in those rooms.

Today our primary focus will be on laying bricks on the driveway and sidewalks. Our plan is to secure the perimeter bricks to the underlying concrete and then lay in the remaining bricks. We need your help with this! This is obviously a labor intensive process but one that could go much more quickly with lots of help. If you have time to help please come over to The House God Built to volunteer anytime after 1 pm. We will work until dark if necessary.

Last weekend of work at The House God Built -UPDATED

This is the last weekend to work at The House God Built. If you have time please come out to help. We need experienced painters to help with some final paint touch-ups and carpenters to help with the stair railings and complete the porch. We also would like to rock the fireplace this weekend so if you are experienced with this task we could use your help. Very soon we'll begin laying bricks on the driveway and sidewalk so we could definitely use help when that time comes. Weather permitting we will lay brick on the sidewalk and driveway on Sunday starting at 1 pm. We need lots of help for this! No experience required. Come out to help if you can.

Thursday update and weekend plans

Thursday the last four interior doors were delivered and installed. We also continued painting by working on doors, trim, and touching up walls and ceilings. Work also continued on the stair railings Thursday.

There will be an afternoon and an evening work session on Friday. The afternoon session will begin around noon while the evening session starts at 6 pm. We also will have our last weekend sessions on Saturday from 8-12 and 1-9 and Sunday from 1-9. Our plans inside The House God Built are to finish installing and painting the remaining trim, finish painting doors, finish touching up paint inside, and finish the fireplace. We also plan to finish the plumbing trim out on Saturday. Outside we will begin laying the bricks on the driveway possibly as early as Saturday. Please check the blog for updates as the weekend proceeds.

Wednesday progress and Thursday plans

Wednesday saw many things crossed off the to do list at The House God Built. Outside the remainder of the concrete was poured for the driveway and sidewalks. Inside we started assembling the stair railings, finished painting most of the interior doors, touched up trim, put a first coat of paint on the inside of the exterior doors, and sealed the grout in the upstairs bathroom.

Our plans to lay brick on the driveway tonight have been postponed. We will continue to finish up tasks inside THGB to be able to turn rooms over to the decorating team as soon as possible. Tonight we will continue with paint touch-ups and hopefully be able to install the last of the interior doors and trim. We also will continue with the stair railing installation. If you are able to help please come on over. We'll start working at about 6 pm.

Tuesday update and plans for the week

As was mentioned in yesterday's posts much of the concrete was poured at The House God Built on Tuesday. Plans are to pour the remainder of the driveway on Wednesday. We will continue working on the interior of the house each night this week and try to completely finish one or more rooms each night. If you have time to help we'll start at about 6 pm each evening.

Concrete update

Concrete is going down at this time. Here are a couple of pictures and a video. More information on plans for later in the week will be posted later.

Concrete is on the way

Great news this morning from The House God Built. We received word over the weekend that we would receive a donation of a crew to pour concrete this week. Last night we received a call that it would happen today! We met with the concrete crew and the landscape designer this morning to coordinate plans and the pour will happen today. Check back later for an update on how this is going.

Less than two weeks to finish The House God Built

Another fantastic weekend of progress ended Sunday with lots of things crossed off the to do list. We now have both retaining walls finished, most of the appliances installed, most of the plumbing trimout completed, most of the ceiling and wall paint touch ups completed, and most of the doors and trim installed.

The remainder of the doors and trim are scheduled to be availalbe on Wednesday as is the remaining appliance. We are expecting a big push this week to see this project through to completion. Check back often for updates.

Time's running out to help

The dedication of The House God Built is quickly drawing near. This is the next to last weekend we have to finish construction! We are getting nearly finished with the house and will be turning our focus to outside projects as weather allows. Our biggest projects to finish are concrete and landscaping. We will need lots of volunteers for each of those as they are each very labor intensive. We are looking for a date to pour concrete so watch the blog for more information on this soon.

Inside we are finishing up! We will have plumbers setting fixtures this weekend and carpenters finishing the door and trim installation. We need experienced painters to help patch some damaged paint on the ceilings and to help with a touch-ups around the house once the remaining carpentry and plumbing work is finished. We also need to seal grout on all tile floors and remove all remaining tools and materials that are no longer needed at the house.

We would love to have your help. Please consider coming over to help this weekend if you can. We'll start working on Saturday at 8 am and will continue until at least 5 pm. We also plan on working Sunday after 1 pm. You can sign-up to help online or give us a call at 573-837-4047 with any questions.

Wednesday update

Tonight we were able to install crown molding on the kitchen cabinets. It made great looking cabinets look even better. We also purchased and installed interior door handles.

The doors and trim that were anticipated today were not available so that has been delayed. Hopefully they will be available no later than this weekend. Speaking of this weekend we still need to finish the remaining doors and trim, place rock on the fireplace, seal grout, and set plumbing fixtures.

If you would like to help out watch for more information here on the blog or sign-up online at our volunteer site. If you have any questions or would like to donate to The House God Built please give us a call at 573-837-4047.

Tuesday update and plans

Today has been a very busy day at The House God Built. The countertops have been installed and look great. The air conditioning is on and feels good. The trash has been dumped and is, well, gone.

Tonight we'll be working on some miscellaneous items inside the house. We can install the toe kick and crown molding on the cabinets, install door hardware, and do some clean-up. With all of the people working at the house today and the muddy conditions outside it is more than ready for a little TLC.

On Wednesday the remainder of the doors and trim will be ready for us to pick up and install. If this can be done during the day we can finish the installation tomorrow night. The blog will be updated once we know that we'll have materials ready.

One final thought for today - I've gotten lots of questions on why there have not been many pictures lately to show the progress. The answer is that we are keeping the interior of the house a suprise for Pastor Thomas and his wife. They will see the inside of the house for the first time at the dedication on June 14th.

Weekend progress and plans for the week

This weekend was a busy one at The House God Built. We were able to install all of the interior doors and trim that we received last week. The remainder may be available to pick up as early as today. We also ventilated the porch attic, cut up brush in the back yard near the alley, sculpted the backyard into it's final form, and leveled the driveway. The backyard retaining wall is built and all that remains is to purchase and place the capstones.

We also received word of donations of the remaining kitchen appliances and landscaping!

This week should be another big week for things to start pulling together. The countertops are scheduled to be delivered and installed today which will allow us to proceed with the plumbing trim out. We also are expecting the air conditioning units to be installed this week.

In other good news there is a complimentary editorial in today's Southeast Missourian. You may read it online.

We'll be deciding on evening work plans as soon as we know that the materials will be available. Check back soon for updated information about our progress and plans.

Saturday update

We were blessed with another great day of progress at The House God Built. The weather was nearly perfect with only a stray passing shower but nothing that kept us from continuing our work outside. We were able to build the backyard retaining wall and the backyard looks great after using a tractor to level the soil and break up the clods.

Inside we now have most of the interior doors on the first floor hung. Much of the trim was also installed on the first floor.

We'll meet at THGB on Sunday afternoon at 1 pm to work on the tasks listed below in yesterday's post that are still incomplete. If you have time to help we would love to see you at The House God Built.

Friday, May 23, 2008

Weekend plans

The House God Built continues to grow closer to completion. Tonight we finished grouting the tile and it will soon be ready to seal. We also finished building the attic access panels today and hung three interior doors this evening.

This weekend we have many things planned and would love to finish all of them and more if possible. With the extra day on Monday we are optimistic that these are all possible to complete with your help.
  • Install toilets and tub fixtures. Countertops have been delayed until Tuesday so sinks will have to wait until next week.
  • Cut up some brush that remains on the back of the property near the alley and haul it off next week.
  • Ventilate the attic over the porch into the second floor attic.
  • Install remaining doors and trim on first floor.
  • Set stones on fireplace.
  • Level driveway.
  • Finish framing driveway.
  • Start sculpting the soil to it's final condition prior to seeding.
  • Finish back retaining wall.
  • Repair driveway retaining wall.

We appreciate all of the help we've had so far with this amazing project and with a little more help we can see this through to completion soon. Besides physically helping with construction we can still use your prayers and donations. If you would like to help out please give us a call at 837-4047 or stop in to see us this weekend.

We'll be working on Saturday from 8 am until we're too tired to continue any longer. Lunch will be provided at noon. On Sunday we'll start working at about 1 pm and again work until we can't go any longer. We'll decide Monday's schedule based on how much we get accomplished on Saturday and Sunday. Hope to see you this weekend!

Doors and trim are going in.

Today volunteers picked up a load of doors and trim and have begun installation. Tonight we'll continue with grout in the bathrooms and a few other tasks. We'll have our weekend plans posted later this evening.

Thursday, May 22, 2008

Grouting begins

Thursday much progress was made on the tile. A special thanks goes to a volunteer who spent much of today chiseling excess thinset from between tiles in the kitchen, dining room, and laundry room. This made it possible for us to grout these areas tonight.

Friday should be an exciting day as our countertops are scheduled to arrive. We are also expecting some of the interior doors and trim on Friday. Our plans are to meet at 6 pm and continue grouting both bathrooms.

Plans for this weekend are still developing but it is looking unlikely that it will include pouring concrete. Look for detailed weekend plans on the blog soon.

Wednesday, May 21, 2008

Tuesday/Wednesday updates and Thursday work sessions

Tuesday a ladies group touched up paint on the ceiling during the day while the evening crew chipped out excess thinset between the tile in the kitchen. Wednesday a concrete pad for the air conditioning units was formed and poured. The remainder of the shutters were also hung.

We will be working Thursday at 10 am and again at about 6 pm. The morning session will be spent cleaning excess thinset from between tile in the bathrooms and laundry room. There may be some work on the retaining wall out back as well. The evening work session will be spent grouting tile. We would appreciate your help if you can find the time.

Tuesday, May 20, 2008

Tuesday work session

We will have a group touching up paint on the ceilings at The House God Built this morning from 9 - 11. If you would like to help today please come on over. The following work session is planned for Wednesday night when we'll be grouting tile. Watch the blog and our volunteer site for updated information on this and other opportunities to serve at The House God Built.

Article in the Southeast Missourian

Thanks to Lindy Bavolek, Kit Doyle, and the Southeast Missourian for a very nice article printed in today's newspaper. We're so glad that others can hear about the exciting things that are happening with this project.

You can't miss the article as it is on the front page (above the fold!) or you can view it on the seMissourian.com website.

As always, if you would like to be involved with The House God Built you can sign-up to help online or by calling our info line at 573-837-4047. Immediate needs are for people experienced (or willing to become experienced) with pouring concrete, installing doors and trim, grouting tile, and building a retaining wall.

We also are still seeking donations of new or gently used appliances (black or stainless would match the range hood/microwave combo and dishwasher that we already have been given), furniture, and household items. If you feel led to provide one or more of these items please contact us on the info line number above or by email at info@thehouseGodbuilt.com.

Sunday update and plans for the week

The House God Built was blessed with beautiful weather this weekend and we made the best of it by spending most of our time on outside projects. The sidewalks are framed and the driveway is nearly framed. We'll be scheduling our concrete pour soon and will post those plans here as soon as possible. Today we also were able to finish placing the gutter drains. These were connected with the perimeter drains to the basement and provide a means for rain to be quickly carried away from the house.

In addition to the concrete pour we have plenty of other items planned soon at The House God Built. On Monday evening we will likely do a bit more work on the backyard with the backhoe and we would also like to grout tile. That would allow us to seal the grout on Wednesday and then install doors and trim soon afterwards.

This weekend we will be doing landsculpting. I'm not sure if that's a word but it describes our plans pretty well as we need to sculpt the terrain to it's final shape, finish installing a retaining wall in the backyard, and generally get the property ready for more traditional landscaping plans the following week. You can help by coming on Saturday anytime between 8 am and 8 pm or Sunday from 1 pm until 8 pm. You can sign-up to help online or by calling our info line at 837-4047. Watch the blog for more specific plans for days and times.

Saturday progress and Sunday plans

Given the outstanding weather this weekend we concentrated our efforts on the outside of The House God Built on Saturday by grading and framing the sidewalks and placing gutter drains. Inside we painted and installed cement board on the fireplace in preparation for masonry work.

Today we'll continue working outside on framing the remainder of the sidewalks and driveway. We also need to form and pour the curbs and a pad for the air conditioning units today. We'll also install the last bit of the gutter drains and back fill trenches. Our hope is to pour the driveway, sidewalks and new basement floor this week.

We would love to have your help with these plans. Stop by today or check back on the blog for updated information on when we'll be working this week at The House God Built.

Weekend plans

Another busy weekend is approaching for The House God Built. We have plans to work on finishing lots of things. These include:

Installing doors and trim
Grouting tile
Finish building the fireplace
Touch-up paint on walls and ceilings
Complete the porch railing
Build retaining wall in the backyard
Prepare the driveway and sidewalks for pouring concrete

As you can see, there is still lots to do for people of pretty much any skill level. We would love to have your help this weekend. If possible, sign-up online or call our info line to let us know how many people to expect.

Siding is FINISHED!!

Things are really starting to happen fast at The House God Built. Last night the siding was finished and a layer of cap stones was placed onto the retaining wall along the driveway. We also unloaded two pallets of retaining wall blocks that will soon be used to build a retaining wall in the backyard. Inside the electricians were finishing up the installation of the electrical fixtures, switches, and receptacles while last night a crew of volunteers did a lot of cleaning.

We're working on our plans for the weekend and would love you to be a part of them. You can sign-up to volunteer online or by calling us at 837-4047. There will be more information about our weekend plans posted here by tomorrow.

We have power!

Yesterday our crew of electricians set up the service panel and installed fixtures while AmerenUE set the pole out front. Today AmerenUE returned after the electrical inspector gave the go ahead to turn on the power. We also purchased more blocks for a retaining wall near the basement wall and will start laying these later tonight. We will also be putting caps on the retaining wall beside the driveway. We would love to have your help. We'll start working at 6 pm.

Tuesday, May 13, 2008

One retaining wall in, one to go

Progress continues at The House God Built. Yesterday we finished installing the retaining wall along the driveway. Once we pick up another load of blocks we'll start working on the retaining wall in the backyard. Also, siding is nearly finished!

Inside THGB the wood flooring is nearly complete and electricians were busy wiring up the service panel and installing fixtures and receptacles. We are hoping for AmerenUE to establish our service any day now.

This morning there will be a group in the house doing final paint touch-ups. Also we would like to have the concrete pad formed and poured for the air conditioning units done today. If you would like to help please stop by this morning.

Monday, May 12, 2008

Sunday update and Monday plans

Yesterday we spent the day bringing the driveway to the proper grade and the half the night taking the retaining wall blocks off the trailer. Our hope is to set these today so we can level out the driveway and return the bobcat. If you have time to come by and set even one block we would appreciate your help!

Also, the wood floors should be completed later today. The installers arrived this morning with the remainder of the flooring and were getting set to start.

Check back on the blog later to find out how you can help out this week at The House God Built.

Saturday, May 10, 2008

Siding's nearly finished

Today we were able to finish siding the front of the house and make great progress on the last remaining wall - a difficult section on the back of the second floor. With any luck we should be able to be completely finished with siding after another day's work.

We also were able to level the ground for pouring both sidewalks, moved the dumpster and the portapotty, and cleaned off the front of the property. Tomorrow we'll prep the driveway for concrete and begin laying the retaining wall.

If you're able to help we'll start working at about 1 pm on Sunday. We plan on working most evenings this week and will have times posted soon.

Timing is everything...

The planned dedication date of May 17th is fast approaching – too fast actually. We have learned that some of the supplies needed to finish the house will not be available until after that date. Rather than dedicate a house that is not finished we have chosen to move the dedication date forward. A new date is in the works and should be available very soon. We regret this delay but want to finish the house with the excellence that has been the hallmark of The House God Built.

Our plan is to continue our pace of construction on the items unaffected by material delays. We still need your help though. Sign-up to help online or by calling our info line at info@thehouseGodbuilt.com. New workdays will be posted soon.

Weekend plans

This weekend we have big projects to finish. Outside we would like to finish with siding, frame and pour the pads for the heat pumps, and frame the driveway and sidewalks for pouring concrete next week. Inside we would like to finish setting cabinetry, grout tile, apply the cement board to the fireplace, continue with the electrical trim-out, and begin the plumbing trim-out.

It's a lot to accomplish in two days but with a great volunteer turn out it's possible. Come be a part of what God's doing in south Cape. We'll start working at 8 am on Saturday and again on Sunday at 1 pm.

Friday, May 9, 2008

Thursday update and Friday plans

As of Thursday night siding on the front of the house is nearly complete! All that remains is the gable end of the porch and the back of the house. Work also continued on setting cabinets and electrical fixtures are starting to go in. AmerenUE was out today to mark the location for our new pole so we're hoping to see progress on getting our electrical service established very soon.

Work will continue on Friday night at 6 pm. We hope to haul off broken concrete from the old driveway. We also plan on leveling the rock in the driveway, placing a retaining wall along the south side of the driveway and building forms to pour concrete for the driveway and sidewalks soon.

We would love to continue working on the siding and other projects around the house as well. If you're available to come out to help Friday night we would love to see you. If you have questions or need more information on how you can help please call our info line at 837-4047 or you can email us at info@thehouseGodbuilt.com.

Wednesday update and Thursday plans

Wednesday we had a great crew of volunteers who came out in the rain to help see The House God Built move towards completion. Today we made some progress on siding despite the rain. We also saw major progress on the wood floors and look forward to seeing more progress tomorrow. Another coat of paint was applied to the master bathroom and touch-up painting happened in several other areas. Cabinets arrived today and were set in the upstairs bathroom and much of the kitchen. In addition, our electrical service panel was placed today so Ameren UE can now set the pole and establish permanent power very soon!

Our plans for Thursday include working on setting the remainder of the cabinetry and installing electrical fixtures, switches, and receptacles. Weather permitting we would love to finish siding the front of the house and move on to the back wall of the upper floor. We would love to have your help. We'll start working at 6 pm and work until 9 or 10 pm. If you have any questions please give us a call at 837-4047 or you can email our info line at info@thehouseGodbuilt.com.

Tuesday update and Wednesday plans

The House God Built continues to be that - the house God built. Today the hardwood floor was installed in the master bedroom, study, and part of the living room. All tile is now down as well. Grouting will be postponed until later this week.

There are plans for lots of work on Wednesday. The hardwood flooring will continue to be installed, doors and trim should be delivered and begin to be installed, painting touch-ups will continue, the electrical service panel will be placed, and the installation of electrical outlets, switches, and fixtures will start. Wednesday evening the cabinets will be delivered and their installation will begin. If weather permits there may be some progress on the siding.

We are continuing to move forward towards our dedication date of May 17th. Please consider coming out to be a part of this work. If you have any questions you can email us at info@thehouseGodbuilt.com or call our info line at 837-4047.

Monday update and Tuesday plans

Monday night we hauled several loads of dirt out of the backyard and have it nearly at the final grade. This weekend we'll complete the grading after installing the gutter drains. We also loaded the brush, limbs, and stumps from the trees that were taken down in the process of installing the sewer line.
The wood flooring arrived and was quickly brought into THGB by a large group of volunteers after the materials and tools were removed from the first and second floors. We also installed cement board and tile in front of the fireplace and finished laying the remaining tile on the first floor.

On Tuesday the first level gets wood flooring during the day and the tile gets grout that evening. We also may have an opportunity to do siding and some carpentry work on the steps during the day.

It's an exciting time to see the progress at The House God Built. Come be a part of it! We will definitely be working at 6 pm and may add a daytime work session as well. The blog will be updated if a daytime work session happens.

Progress at THGB and help needed tonight

It was a productive weekend at The House God Built. Most of the tile is down and much of the siding on the front of the house is up. The finish line is in sight. We still need help though. Tonight we'll be moving materials stored in the house out and bringing hardwood floooring in that will be installed later this week. We also need to gather up brush from the trees that were taken down over the weekend and do some touch-up painting. If you can help with any of these projects please come over tonight at 6 pm.

Saturday progress and Sunday and Monday plans

The House God Built continues to move towards it's completion date of May 17th and we have plenty of progress to report from Saturday. Most of the work happened outside on Saturday with major excavation in the backyard. The sewer line is now functional and the backyard is nearly at it's final grade. Now that this is complete we can prepare to pour concrete for the basement floor, driveway, and sidewalks.

Also outside on Satuday we continued with siding and got about half of the front of the house done. This part of the house is challanging due to the bay window and porch but it would seem that the hardest parts were done yesterday and today should go a bit more smoothly. Once the front is complete we have to hang siding on the back of the second floor to finish all siding work.

Inside THGB we did lots of cleanup in preparation for the hardwood flooring to go in later this week by scraping splattered drywall mud off the floors and revising the treads on the stairs. We also have much of the tile laid in the kitchen, dining room, and master bathroom. Today we'll try to finish those rooms and see how far we can get on the laundry room and upstairs bathroom.

On Monday we will be receiving our hardwood flooring and need help bringing it inside. We also need to do some touch-up painting around windows and a few spots on the ceilings. Check back on the blog later today to see how you can help at The House God Built this week.

Only two more weeks until the dedication of The House God Built. We have accomplished so much work in this project but need your help to see it through to completion.

To do list for Saturday and Sunday:

Finish siding front of house and start siding on the back of the second floor.

Finish sewer connection and improve grade of backyard.

Install hurricane clips on the rafters under the porch.

Touch-up interior paint.

Tile laundry room, dining room, kitchen, and upstairs bathroom.
It's a lot of work but we have jobs for every skill level this weekend. Please consider coming over to help. Lunch is provided on Saturday at noon.

Weekend plans

We have a BIG weekend planned at The House God Built and hope YOU can be a part of it. Time is running short and we need lots of help to get the house finished in time for the dedication scheduled on May 17th.

We plan on working again Friday night, all day Saturday, and part of Sunday morning/early afternoon. We need to finish all painting and tile work soon so we will be ready to lay hardwood flooring next week. (Speaking of hardwood floors we need help to move it into the house on Monday evening.) We also will continue hanging siding this weekend and would like to finish that soon as well.

On Saturday we will plan to have heavy equipment working in the backyard to finish the sewer line. This will require taking down at least one tree. If anyone is available to help cut up the tree once it is on the ground that would be very helpful. We will also be grading the yard so that we can begin landscaping soon after the concrete has been poured in the basement floor and the driveway.

Please come help at any time that you can. Click here for times and days we will be working and please sign-up online or by calling us at 837-4047 so we can have a plan for the number of people that are wanting to help. An awesome lunch is being planned for Saturday so come prepared to work hard, have fun, and enjoy a good meal with old and new friends.

URGENT REQUEST: We need a dump truck driver to pick up a load of rock on Friday afternoon! We have a truck available to use. If you can help with this please call 986-3154. Thanks!

Thursday work session planned

Thursday night our plan is to continue laying tile and work on interior painting. We may also try to do some siding if possible. There will be a work crew on Friday night as well to continue with the same tasks as tonight.

Weekend plans:

This weekend we will continue to hang siding and lay tile. Interior painting should also be complete by the end of the weekend. We also have plans to have heavy equipment working in the backyard on Saturday to put in the remainder of the sewer line and to improve the grade of the backyard. On Monday night we need volunteers who can help carry in boxes of hardwood flooring that will be installed later that week. There will also be other work happening around THGB most nights next week so check the blog frequently for updated information.

If you can help out please sign-up online or give us a call at 837-4047.

Tonight we hope to continue with tile, siding, and painting. If you can make time to come out tonight we would love to have your help. We'll work from 6 pm - 9 pm. If you have any questions about how you can help please give us a call on our info line at 837-4047.

Work continues tonight

Tonight we will continue painting and laying tile at The House God Built. If we have enough help we will also continue with siding. We will start at 6 pm and work until about 9. Hope to see you there.

Another weekend of work done

The House God Built is headed into the homestretch. This weekend we continued working on the siding and and nearly have three sides finished. We also worked on interior painting and got quite a bit done. We also were able to have the electrical trench dug, conduit placed, and the trench backfilled. We should have electricity in about a week if things go according to plan.

This week we hope to finish the interior painting, begin laying tile, finish the porch, and side the front of the house. It's an ambitious goal but should be achievable. We probably will also start painting the trim before it is installed next week.

If you are interested in helping out with any of these things please watch the blog and our online volunteer sign-up for additional information.

More painting Thursday night

Tonight we continued to apply the first coat of paint to the interior of The House God Built and thanks to a great volunteer turnout we got lots done. The entire upstairs was painted - two bedrooms, two closets, bathroom, and stairwell. Downstairs the dining room, kitchen and much of the living room were also painted. Combined with the hard working volunteers on Wednesday that hand sanded the entire house and put paint on the walls in the master bedroom, master bathroom and closet, and the laundry room we very nearly have one coat of paint on the entire interior.

This weekend we will continue painting. We need to complete the painting prior to Monday as the hardwood floors will be going in next week. Our plans are to also begin laying tile, complete the front porch, and begin siding the front of the house.

If you are available to help with any of these things please volunteer by signing up online or giving us a call on our info line at 837-4047. Lunch will be provided at noon on Saturday.

Painting continues Wednesday night

Tons of people showed up to paint tonight at The House God Built. We will be painting again tomorrow night starting at about 7 pm. If you are available to help please come. Bring a trim brush and a roller handle if you have them. Hope to see you Thursday night!

Painting begins!

Last night the interior walls were primered and the ceiling was painted. This morning the painting began downstairs and will continue tonight upstairs. If you are free to help come by at 7 pm.

We will likely have a painting crew in on Thursday evening as well. Check back here on the blog or at www.thehouseGodbuilt.volunteerhub.com for more information as it becomes available.

Weekend update and UPDATED plans for the week

Thanks again to our many volunteers who worked hard this weekend to move forward The House God Built. We had beautiful weather to enjoy and the good company of old and new friends to share in the work.

This weekend we were able to make great progress on the siding. The north and back sides of the house are done and the south side of the house is done on the first level. We'll be able to finish this side and start the front later this week.

We also started working on building the porch. It should be finished soon. Pastor Thomas has already tried out sitting on the porch and seemed to enjoy it. (I think he'll like it even better in about a month when we turn the house over to him.) Once the railing is up later this week we'll be ready to side the front of the house.
.
Since the weather was so beautiful we decided to concentrate our work outside and left the tile until later. We got three loads of rock delivered and spread it out to form the base of the driveway - an unexpected but much needed bonus.

The drywall finishers worked again on Monday night and the house is now ready for primer. TONIGHT we will be masking off windows and hopefully starting to apply the primer. We should have times available for painting soon! Check back here on the blog for more information.

Monday, April 21, 2008

Work crew needed tonight

We will be meeting at The House God Built at 6 pm tonight to do some outside work before this week's rains begin. Our first priority will be finishing the porch but if we have enough help we can work on siding also.

We will also be able to start masking off windows inside the house in preparation for primer and paint. If you would like to help with either of these activities you can sign-up online or if you have a last-minute opening in your schedule, just come on over. Hope to see you tonight.

### Check back soon for plans for this week ##

This week we will be working on several nights to try to keep the progress moving forward in time for completion in about one month. We need help with painting preparation as well as painting the interior walls this week.

You can help by praying for The House God Built! In addition to prayer, we also need volunteers who can help out during our work sessions. Times for these work sessions will be posted very soon. Check back Monday- we may have a Monday night work session and will likely have sessions on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday in addition to our usual weekend times. Hope to see you at The House God Built this week!

Rain Free (mostly) Saturday

Fortunately the rain was limited to occasional drizzle today which allowed us to make great progress on the siding. The siding is now pretty much finished on both the north and back sides of the house. The first floor of the porch is nearly up and looking good. Tomorrow's forcast is for fantastic weather and an even better day at The House God Built. Please come out and join us! We'll meet at 1 pm and work until at least 5 pm but if we're having too much fun to stop we may work later.

### CHANGE IN PLANS ###

We just learned that the drywall finishers do not believe that we will be able to paint this weekend. The temperatures and humidity have prevented drying from happening at the expected rate so painting will be postponed.

Our plans for the weekend will include framing the front porch, continuing with siding, and laying tile. If you would like to help out with these activities we will work from 8-5 on Saturday and again from 1-5 on Sunday. If you have questions please give us a call on the info line at 837-4047 or email us at info@thehouseGodbuilt.com. As always, it helps us out if you can please sign-up online or give us a call if you think you can make it out to help.

We will update the blog with information about painting as soon as possible. We may need help during the week with taping off windows and other prep for painting once the drywall folks give us the ok. Please watch the blog for updates on how you can help out.

Another weekend packed with progress

We made great strides this weekend and we're closing in on the last month of construction.

This weekend the drywall finishing was started and will be completed later this week. We also installed most of the cement board so we'll be ready to lay tile soon. Outside we continued to hang siding and with a great volunteer turnout we could finish this weekend.
Speaking of this weekend we need painters Saturday afternoon! Everything will get taped off by Friday so the primer coats can be sprayed on Saturday morning and the topcoats rolled on Saturday afternoon. We have the paint but just need you to be the painter!

Come ready for a great opportunity to be a part of God working in our community!

If you can help us in any way please sign-up online or call us at 837-4047. Lunch will be provided on Saturday. We can also provide off site childcare on Saturday as well if that would make it possible for you to volunteer. Please let us know that you need childcare as soon as possible by calling our info line at 837-4047 or email us at info@thehouseGodbuilt.com.

Saturday update and upcoming plans

The drywall finishers got off to an early start and began taping and mudding the joints at 7 am today. They completed today's work by lunch and will come back tomorrow for the next layer of mud. A special thanks to them for stepping in to help at the last second to keep The House God Built on track.

We also had volunteers inside THGB who installed cement board in the master bathroom, kitchen, dining room, and laundry room. Outside work was done with the siding and limbs were picked up on the lot where the construction trailer is parked.

Our plans for tomorrow afternoon are to finish the cement board upstairs. If the weather permits we still need to cut up the tree that fell during the ice storm and mow. If we have enough help we would love to move forward with the siding as well. If you have time to help with any of these things we'll see you between 1 and 5 pm on Sunday.

NEXT WEEKEND - We plan to paint the interior of THGB!!! The primer coat will be sprayed on Saturday morning and we need LOTS OF PEOPLE to volunteer to help paint the top coats with rollers. Painters will be needed in the afternoon. It helps our planning tremendously if you can let us know that you are coming - please sign-up online or call us at 837-4047.

Siding, cement board, and lawn care - oh my

Can you tell that it's getting harder to come up with titles for these posts?

We have big plans for The House God Built this weekend and hope you can be a part of them! We will be hanging siding on the back and sides of the house as well as putting cement board down in the kitchen, dining room, laundry room, and bathrooms in preparation for laying tile soon. We also need to cut up a tree that fell during the ice storm and do some mowing/weedeating across the street where the construction trailer is parked. If you have them please bring tools appropriate for whichever of these jobs you would like to help with (i.e. hammer, extension ladder, scaffolding, chainsaw, mower, weedeater, etc.).

We can really use your help. If you have time to come over please give us a call at 837-4047 or sign-up online at www.thehouseGodbuilt.volunteerhub.com. Lunch will be provided on Saturday. We plan on working Saturday from 8 am to 5 pm and Sunday from 1 to 5 pm.

Monday, April 7, 2008

Siding continues

Thanks to our volunteers this weekend we continued to hang siding and now have a good start on three sides. The siding on the front of the house is delayed due to the posts for the front porch being a special order item that is taking longer than anticipated. Once they are available the front porch will be framed and siding can continue around to the front of the house.

This coming weekend we'll continue hanging siding and install cement board in the kitchen, dining room, laundry room, and bathrooms. We would love to have your help! If you're available to help this weekend for a day or even for an hour please come. To help us with our planning please sign-up online or give us a call at 837-4047 if think you can make it.

Siding starts going up!

This weekend we had a great turnout of volunteers to help hang siding. We got the starter strips hung on three sides and started siding on two of those sides. We're excited about this new phase of construction and with the work that started this weekend we should be able to make major progress going into next weekend. If you would like to help in any way please sign-up online or call 837-4047 to let us know you want to help. We have lunch planned on Saturday but need to know how many people to expect. This weekend we'll continue to hang siding and also work backfilling trenches around the property. Bring a hammer and wear boots if possible. Also we need scaffolding and extension ladders so if you have that available please bring it.

Thursday, March 27, 2008

Siding begins!

The house is soon going to start looking more finished on the outside. We'll start hanging siding this Saturday afternoon on both sides and the back of the house if we have enough volunteers. This is another area where we can use both skilled and unskilled volunteers so please consider coming down to help no matter how experienced you are. Please sign-up online or give us a call at 837-4047 if you can make it.

For those who prefer working inside we have a few light tasks that can easily be done by inexperienced volunteers. We need to finish sanding over the screws in the drywall and do some clean-up in the house in preparation for the professional finishers. Once again, please let us know you are planning on coming by signing up online or giving us a call at 837-4047.

Spring Break work at THGB

If anyone has time on Saturday morning to help backfill the trenches alongside the new basement walls please contact us ASAP. A load of rock has been delivered and will need to be moved by wheelbarrow so that we can put up siding on Saturday. So, if you're looking to spend some time working at The House God Built and want a good workout please give us a call on our info line at 837-4047 or you can email us at info@thehouseGodbuilt.com.

Digging up the yard

This weekend we dug up the back yard to make the sewer connection. We also took out the remainder of the broken concrete in the driveway, sidewalk, and the retaining wall by the driveway. Once the sewer line is inspected we'll be ready to fill in the trench.

This coming weekend we'll be ready to start siding! We're hoping for a big turnout of volunteers so we can get Pastor Thomas moved into his new home by early May. If you are available to help out please sign-up online or give us a call at 837-4047 to let us know you are coming.

Saturday, March 22, 2008

Final drywall (I think) and dirt work

This weekend we'll finish our work on the drywall by insuring that all drywall screws are properly sunk and then mud over them. We're also finishing the installation of the corner bead. Outside we're doing dirt work for plumbing and improving the grade of the property.

If you can help come by today. Lunch is provided at noon.

Monday, March 17, 2008

Almost done with the drywall

This past weekend and tonight we focused on doing any touch-up of the drywall needed to turn the house over to the professionals for finishing. To complete this process we believe it is possible to be done in one more work session which is scheduled for Wednesday, March 19th. We need a few skilled volunteers and a few more unskilled volunteers. If you fit either of those categories (it's not hard to be one or the other) and have a couple of hours to work on Wednesday night please sign-up to help online or give us a call at 837-4047 to let us know you're coming.

We also are planning on working during the day on Friday and Saturday. We'll post more details about those days here on the blog very soon.

Drywall touch-up TONIGHT

Tonight we plan on working at THGB to do some last minute touch-up of the drywall before we turn it over to the professionals for finishing. We will be insuring that screws are properly sunk, that all electrical boxes have been cut out properly, and that corner bead is applied on all outside corners. If we have enough help there is a small amount of drywall to hang in the basement as well.

If you have some time to help out tonight consider coming out to help. As always, you can register to volunteer online or by calling 837-4047.

Thursday, March 13, 2008

Plans for this weekend

We have a lighter list of things to do this weekend at The House God Built. The professional finishing of the drywall had to be delayed unfortunately but we will try to make up the time by double-checking that all screws are properly sunk, installing corner bead, and possibly doing some taping. We will also do some clean-up in the house later on Saturday or Sunday so that there is nothing in the way once the professionals arrive to finish the drywall.

Outside, we may try to finish the last bit of Tyvek and do a few other miscellaneous tasks.

If any of these things sound like fun we would love to see you this weekend but otherwise weather permitting we may be ready for a large group workday next Saturday.

Drywall Blitz Continues Today

We made FANTASTIC progress on the drywall yesterday with the largest volunteer turnout during the construction phase of THGB so far. With the help of several volunteers we should be able to finish up hanging drywall today in time to turn it over to the professionals to mud and tape. If you have any spare time to come by and help please do so. We'll start working at 1 pm and we will keep going until we're finished. If you can come please bring a tape measure, razor knife, and screw gun if you have them.

Saturday, March 8, 2008

Drywall Blitz Weekend

We're ready for a big weekend of hanging drywall starting at 8 am this morning. If you have spare time to come out today please consider doing so. We have heat and the planned work is indoors. Bring a screwgun, razor knife, tape measure, and a T-square if you have them. Call us at 837-4047 with any questions.

Friday, March 7, 2008

The weather outside is frightful...

...but we're still planning on working at The House God Built this weekend no matter what weather we have. Last night we moved in a load of drywall and set up tools and supplies for a productive weekend. We will have heat and all of the work will be indoors.

At this point we are planning on working all day Saturday and Sunday afternoon. There has been some interest in a workday today and since most schools are closed and many businesses may follow that may be possible. If you are interested in working today please give us an email at info@thehouseGodbuilt.com or call 573-837-4047 and we'll try to put together a work session. Check back here on the blog for updates.

Progress update

This weekend we moved tons of rock into the new portion of the basement at The House God Built. By doing this we'll soon be ready to pour the concrete that will become the floor for this area. We also were able to do some work on the drywall in the stairwell.

We have set a goal of turning the house over to the professional drywall finishers by March 10th. This means that we have to finish hanging all of the remaining drywall this coming weekend. What remains is all of the perimeter walls (the inside of the exterior walls), both bathrooms, about half of the stairwell, and two closets. A lot of work for a few people but very manageable if we have groups of people that would be willing to lend a hand. A couple of experienced people are helpful but those who have never done this sort of work before can be very helpful as well. We’ll be getting the materials ready this week and should have everything in place for a big weekend. If you would like to help please sign-up online or call us at 837-4047 so we can be sure to have enough lunch available. If you have the following tools please bring them: T-square, tape measure, razor knife, and screw gun.

Insulation is going in.

Today the insulation is being blown in at THGB. Once it has dried we will be able to start installing the drywall on the perimeter walls. This weekend we would also like to move rock into the new portion of the basement in preparation for pouring the floor. If you would like to help, please sign-up or give us a call at 837-4047.

More progress

The ceiling drywall was completed today as was most of the interior walls. This week our plans are to have the insulation installed in the perimeter walls and then finish hanging drywall on those walls. Once the weather improves we'll have lots of exterior work to do such as framing the porch, hanging siding, landscaping, and pouring concrete for the driveway and sidewalk. Check back later this week for updated plans for volunteer opportunities this weekend. As always, if you would like to sign-up to help take a look at www.thehouseGodbuilt.volunteerhub.com.

Another milestone reached

We learned today that we have passed our electrical inspection!
Many thanks to all who helped to get this accomplished. Now that this has occurred we are able to move forward with the insulation that is scheduled to be installed tomorrow. Volunteers spent this weekend, Monday night, and much of Wednesday hanging drywall on the ceiling of all but the living room, kitchen and dining room. These rooms will be tackled this weekend. Today drywall was hung in the study and the master bedroom walls. We are hoping for a big turnout of help this weekend and have a small group that is scheduled to work on Saturday morning but still need additional help (especially for Saturday and Sunday afternoon). If you have time to come out to help hang drywall we could use a hand. If you don't know how to hang drywall don't worry we can use your help too. To volunteer sign-up online or give us a call at 573-837-4047.

Work Cancelled Today--Due to Weather

Check back later for updates.

Weather or not

No typo there. Weather is an issue today. We are going to try to get supplies to be able to drywall tonight but may call off work if conditions continue to worsen as predicted. Check back on the blog before heading over to THGB.

Drywall time!!

The electrical rough-in was finished today so that puts us on schedule to start drywall installation on Monday!! We have a tight deadline so any help on Monday night starting at 5:00 pm would be GREAT!!! Here's the plan: as long as we are able to get the electrical work inspected on Monday afternoon, we will begin hanging drywall on the ceiling of the second floor and on the portion of the first floor that is single story. This must be done by Thursday as we are scheduled to have the insulation installed that day. Our plan is to continue working on Tuesday and Wednesday night as well until the drywall is up in those areas. If you can work with us this week please sign-up at www.thehouseGodbuilt.volunteerhub.com or by calling us at 573-837-4047. We need skilled and unskilled volunteers so don't hesitate to come just because you don't know how to do a specific job. Hope to see you this week at The House God Built!

Join us at THGB this week

Things are going to be busy this week at THGB. Today the electrical rough-in is being completed which means the city can do their inspection early this week. Once the inspection occurs we will be hanging drywall on the ceiling of the second floor and the rear of the first floor in preparation for insulation being blown into the attic on Thursday.

Today we'll also be pouring forms for the porch which will be framed later this week and digging the forms for the chimney. We'll start working at 1:00 today. If you have time to stop by we would love to have your help. Also, we will need help on Monday, Tuesday, and/or Wednesday evening (electrical inspection will determine when we can work) hanging drywall. Check back here for updated information on when this will occur or sign-up at www.thehouseGodbuilt.volunteerhub.com and we'll contact you.

Friday, February 8, 2008

Work for February 9 & 10

We have lots of odds and ends that need to be completed this weekend. Carpentry projects include moving some framing on the second floor, finishing the framing of the fireplace, installing hurricane clips between the raffles, and insulation baffles between the raffles. Outside we'll be placing footings for the porch and digging footings for the fireplace. We'll be at the house on Saturday from 8:00 until 5:00 and again on Sunday from 1:00 until 5:00. We would love to have your help. If you have questions, please give us a call at 573-837-4047 or sign-up at www.thehouseGodbuilt.volunteerhub.com.

Super Bowl Weekend update

Melting snow has made quite a mess outside so exterior work is being delayed until things dry out a bit. The only interior work that is planned for Sunday is finishing the electricial rough-in. If you can help with that, we'll see you at 2 pm otherwise enjoy the Super Bowl.

Super Bowl Weekend at THGB

This weekend we'll be finishing the electrical rough-in in preparation for HVAC and insulation work inside THGB. Outside we still need to finish backfilling around the new end of the basement. If you are availalbe to help with any of this please stop by THGB this weekend.

Monday, January 28, 2008

THGB progressing

The House God Built is moving forward. Plumbing rough-in is finished and electrical rough-in should be finished by the end of this week. After inspections and HVAC rough-in we'll be ready for drywall to be installed. Watch for information about when this will be starting as we'll need plenty of volunteers at that stage of construction.

Outside THGB we worked on digging forms for the front porch. Once those are inspected we'll be able to build the porch. As weather permits we'll begin siding the house also. Last week we got the fantastic news that the siding had been donated! We'll soon need people to hang it. Check back here regularly for news about when that will go up.

Many thanks go out to all who have donated materials or labor to this project! If you would like to sign-up to help check out http://www.thehousegodbuilt.volunteerhub.com/ or give us a call at 573-837-4047.

Great work day today, another great day planned for tomorrow

Today we got lots of work done. We still need your help on Sunday though. If you can help please sign-up or call with questions at 573-837-4047. Tomorrow we plan on the last bit of taping on the Tyvek, digging footings for the porch, assorted carpentry projects, finishing the expanding foam, continuing with the electrical rough-in and backfilling the trench with gravel.
